Bringing Buddhist Traditions To Life In Cinema
For centuries, Buddhist monastics have practiced in monasteries and remote mountain hermitages across China, their dedication and wisdom largely unseen by the outside world. Our films aim to be a bridge, offering a rare glimpse into their daily lives, sacred traditions, and profound spiritual practices. By sharing these stories, we hope to inspire a deeper understanding of Chán Buddhism and contribute to a global appreciation for these unique traditions.
About the team
Edward Burger is a documentary filmmaker known for his intimate and insightful explorations of Buddhist life and practice in China. His journey began at The College of Wooster, where his Religious Studies coursework introduced him to China's Chán (Zen) Masters, inspiring him to live in China for 12 years, mastering Mandarin and studying with a "mountain monk" in the Zhongnan Mountains. With his teacher's blessing, he embarked on his filmmaking career, starting with Amongst White Clouds and continuing with acclaimed documentaries like Alms, Vows, One Mind, and The Mountain Path. Edward's work is globally recognized, praised by academic journals, and screened at film festivals and universities. Supported by grants and long-standing collaborations, he enjoys unprecedented access to revered monasteries in China, allowing him to create authentic portrayals of vibrant contemporary Buddhist traditions. His newest feature-length documentary, Waking Up - Tea & Chan in China, is currently in production.
Edward's films are made possible by the support of a core team of dedicated professionals. His filmmaking partner and wife, Agnes provides integral support in writing and production.
